Baseball Falls to Union in Penultimate Florida Matchup

RECAP

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Elmhurst University baseball team faced off against Union (N.Y.) in a neutral-site matchup in Winter Haven, Florida, falling 10-5 in their penultimate matchup in the Sunshine State.

The game saw Elmhurst take an early lead but struggle to maintain momentum against Union's offense. Despite a strong fourth inning, Elmhurst couldn't contain Union, who pulled away in the later innings for a 10-5 victory. Elmhurst finished with five runs on seven hits while playing error-free baseball, but Union's 10-run output on 13 hits proved too much to overcome.

Elmhurst's offense was highlighted by a key performance from Evan Johnson, who launched a solo home run in the third inning to get Elmhurst on the board. The fourth inning saw Elmhurst string together four runs with contributions from multiple hitters, including a key hit from Rock Smith. On the mound, Davis Maifield started for Elmhurst, battling through four innings before the bullpen took over.

The game began quietly, with both teams going scoreless through the first two innings. In the third inning, Elmhurst took a 1-0 lead thanks to a solo home run from Johnson. However, Union responded in the fourth, putting up two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Elmhurst answered back with a big fourth inning of their own, scoring four runs to reclaim the lead at 5-2.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Union chipped away with two more runs in the sixth to cut Elmhurst's lead to 5-4. The seventh inning remained scoreless, but Union scored six runs to take a commanding 10-5 lead. Elmhurst's offense stalled in the later innings, unable to mount a comeback, and Union closed out the game for the win.
