DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Elmhurst University baseball team defeated the Hamilton Continentals with a final score of 11-1 in their final game of the Florida spring break trip.
Elmhurst's offense dominated, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits, while Hamilton struggled to produce, scoring only 1 run on 7 hits. The Bluejays showcased strong offensive performances from several players. Marty Fraga reached base four times, with three hits and a hit by pitch, and also stole a base. Brett Vercruyss contributed three hits and was hit by a pitch twice, in addition to stealing a base. Rock Smith delivered a home run and drove in four runs. Evan Johnson homered, had three RBIs, and added a sacrifice fly. Logan Bryant also homered for Elmhurst.
Elmhurst took an early lead in the top of the first inning, with Fraga singling to right field and advancing to third. Johnson then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Fraga and putting Elmhurst ahead 1-0. Hamilton quickly countered in the bottom of the first to tie the game after a Kopp single to center field, scoring H. Boehm and leveling the score at 1-1.
The second inning remained scoreless for both sides. Elmhurst broke the game open in the top of the third, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Fraga was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second and advance to third. Vercruyss was also hit by pitch, and Smith singled to left field, driving in a run, and Johnson singled to left field, with two more runs scoring due to an error. Adan Nieves singled to third base, bringing in another run. The bottom of the third was scoreless.
The fourth and fifth innings were quiet, with neither team adding runs. In the top of the sixth, Elmhurst extended their lead to 9-1 with four more runs. Tommy Wichgers walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Fraga walked, Vercruyss was hit by pitch, and Smith knocked a grand slam top open the game wide for Elmhurst. The bottom of the sixth was scoreless.
In the top of the eighth, Bryant homered to left field, increasing the score to 10-1. Elmhurst added their final run in the top of the ninth when Johnson homered to right field, making the final score 11-1.
