MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Elmhurst University women's volleyball team grabbed their first win of the 2024 campaign en route to a 1-1 opening day at the Rhodes College Classic.
Elmhurst (1-4) opened the day with a sweep of the University of Dallas (0-6), dominating all aspects of their first victory, and ended the night with an 0-3 loss to Millsaps College (4-1).
Against Dallas, the Jays were able to gain the lead early, but an 11-1 run from Dallas allowed them to take a 16-13 lead. Elmhurst would respond in a big way, going on a set-closing 12-2 run, including nine-straight in a row, to take set one. From there, the match remained tight, but the Jays were able to gain victories of 25-23 and 25-21 to secure the sweep.
Kali Phillips led the Jays with ten kills on the night, while
Keely Larson contributed nine kills and a block.
Jada Wiley tallied 11 digs to go with seven kills and three service aces, while
Gianna Ptaszek tallied four aces and five digs in the match.Â
Despite a 13 kill, six dig effort from Wiley against Millsaps, the Jays were unable to gain momentum in the second match of the day as the designated visitors took set one, 25-17, and sets two and three by a score of 25-22 to complete the sweep of the Jays.
