ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's soccer team used an early scoring surge to down Lakeland University, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Langhorst Field.
Elmhurst (1-0) scored both of their goals early in the opening half, and rode the momentum to a season-opening clean sheet.
Lakeland (0-1) had plenty of opportunities to score, sending 13 shots (seven on goal) into the box, but starting goalkeeper
Niyen Ruffin made seven saves and kept a clean sheet to keep the Muskies at bay.Â
Brady Lucas opened the scoring for the Bluejays in the 11th minute, taking a feed from
Maciej Rzadkosz and finding the back of the net to put Elmhurst up. Just four minutes later,
Jacob Wipke was able to find a streaking
Ryan Nguyen outside the box, who buried his shot to double the Bluejay lead.
From the second Bluejay goal, the game continued to be physical, and both teams had chances to find the back of the net yet again, but the stifling Ruffin and the Bluejay defense proved to be strong in the 2-0 opening victory of the 2024 season.
