Bluejays Stifle Eureka

RECAP

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team handled Eureka College Tuesday afternoon at Butterfield Park by a score of 16-5 in seven innings.

Elmhurst (9-24) scored multiple runs in all but one inning in the game, knocking four extra-base hits and two long balls to down Eureka (16-16).

The Bluejays knocked a season-high 19 hits in the game, with eight different Bluejays tallying multiple hits in the game. Marty Fraga went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate while adding a pair of RBI's, while Freddie March knocked in a team-high four RBI in the game. Jaden Mitchell tallied three RBI with a three-run home run en route to a 5-for-5 outing at the plate, while Connor Downs and Rock Smith joined Fraga with two RBI's in the game. Erik Malott and Javier Cervantes each tallied two hits and one RBI.

On the mound, Joseph Ingratta earned the win in the shortened game with four innings pitched, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four batters. The duo of Spencer Anton (one inning pitched, two hits, one unearned run) and Jonathan Boyles (two innings pitched, no hits, no runs, two strikeouts) closed out the game on the mound for the Jays.

Elmhurst loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning, where March stepped to the plate and knocked in two with a single up the middle. Another single loaded the bases for Malott, who singled to left field to bring in another run. A balk by the Eureka pitcher would be the last run scored in the first, putting Elmhurst up 4-0 after one inning.

Eureka would gain two runs back in the second, cutting their deficit in half, but the Bluejay bats would go back to work in the second. After a Fraga single and a hit by pitch from Drowns put two runners on, Mitchell would homer them home to put another three runs on the board in the second. Drowns would later double in two more runners to extend the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

Two more runs would cross the plate for the visitors in the fourth, but the long ball would come into play again for Elmhurst, with Smith knocking a two-run shot to left field to make it 11-4 in favor of Elmhurst in the fourth.

After one more run from Eureka in the fifth and a shutout inning for the Bluejay offense in their half of the fifth, the bats would again find their way in the sixth. A leadoff double from Malott would be effective, as Cervantes singled up the middle to score him from second, and a Fraga single through the right side later in the inning would score another two Bluejays. March would end the scoring for Elmhurst with a two-run single to make it 16-5, and Boyles would close the Red Devils out in the seventh to secure Elmhurst's run-rule win.
