ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team snapped their losing skid Friday evening with an 11-3 victory over Wheaton College at Butterfield Park.
Elmhurst (7-22, 3-10 CCIW) used strong work at the plate and a shutdown performance on the mound from
Cole Bozzi to take game one of the three-game weekend series over the Thunder (7-21, 1-11 CCIW).
Bozzi earned his third win of the season thanks to seven strong innings of work, giving up nine hits and a pair of runs while striking out nine batters on the evening.
Jonathan Boyles wrapped up the night for the Jays, giving up just two hits and one run across two innings on the mound.
At the plate, seven different Bluejays contributed runs on the evening, with
Ryan Thrawl knocking in a run on a pair of hits and
Marty Fraga also providing two hits for the Jays.Â
Freddie March got the scoring started in the first with a sacrifice fly, and
Zach Kolb scored following a single from
Evan Johnson and a fielding error by Wheaton, giving the Bluejays a 2-0 advantage early. Kolb would extend the lead to three with an RBI single in the second, and would double to six in the fourth after
Logan Bryant reach on an error and a pair of passed balls and wild pitches scoring another two.
Two more runs would cross the plate in the sixth from an RBI fielders choice off the bat of
Erik Malott and an RBI single from
Davis Maifield, giving Elmhurst a 9-0 advantage.
Wheaton would gain two runs back from an RBI triple and a single, but Elmhurst would get both runs back in the eighth after a fielding error by the Thunder left fielder plated a pair to put Elmhurst up, 11-2. Despite another run scoring for Wheaton in the ninth, Boyles would put a bow on things and retire the final batter of the game on a groundout to second base, sealing an 11-3 conference win for Elmhurst.
