ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -Â The Elmhurst University baseball team opened the 2024 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season at Augustana College Friday afternoon, managing a split in a doubleheader with the defending conference champions.
Elmhurst (5-13, 1-1 CCIW) took game one with a 12-7 victory, using strong pitching and a big first inning to fuel the win, but fell, 0-8, in game two.
It was a balanced offensive attack in game one, with seven different players knocking in runs for the Bluejays, with
Ryan Thrawl,
Javier Cervantes, and
Blake Gould each tallying a pair of RBI. On the mound,
Charlie Smith pitched 6.1 strong innings, giving up just four runs while adding four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
In game two, the bats went cold as the Bluejay offense only mustered three hits, with two coming from third baseman
Tommy Wichgers.Â
