ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University men's basketball team secured an 82-68 victory over Saint Mary's (MN) in a non-conference matchup held at R.A. Faganel Hall on Tuesday (Nov. 26) evening.
The Bluejays improved to an overall record of 3-2, while the Cardinals fell to 2-4.
Elmhurst's top performers included Tagen Pearson, who led the team with a career-high 30 points, hitting 9-of-14 baskets and 7-of-10 3-pointers. Dominic Trelenberg contributed significantly with 14 points, making 5-of-9 shots. Aidyn Boone displayed versatility with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds, along with four assists. Sebastian Blachut was notable for his playmaking, recording six assists and two steals. Additionally, John Witcher added defensive prowess with two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half began with Saint Mary's taking an early lead after Owen Ziegler's three-pointer, making the score 3-0. The Bluejays responded with a 3-pointer by Pearson, tying the game at 7-7 midway through the half. Elmhurst then pulled ahead with a series of successful free throws and fast-break plays, including a dunk by Vinnie Adjahoungbeta and another 3-pointer from Pearson, extending their lead to 18-11. The Bluejays maintained momentum, leading to a halftime score of 38-31 in their favor, aided by strong performances from Boone and Witcher.
The Bluejays extended their lead over SMU during the second half, outscoring the visitors 44-37. Elmhurst's Pearson played a pivotal role with multiple 3-pointers, including a crucial one at a key moment, contributing significantly to their scoring efforts. Saint Mary's Jackson Harvey made consistent contributions, scoring a layup and capitalizing on free throws, but the team struggled to keep pace with the Bluejays' offensive momentum. Despite a few turnovers and missed opportunities, Elmhurst maintained their lead through a balanced attack, finishing the game with a 14-point advantage.
