WHEATON, Ill. -Â The Elmhurst University women's volleyball team dropped their final CCIW contest of the season, 3-0, on the road at Wheaton College Saturday afternoon.
Elmhurst drops to 12-11 overall, and 2-6 in the CCIW, while Wheaton improves to 12-12 and 2-5 in conference.
Despite a competitive first set, Elmhurst was unable to hold on to a large lead in the second set, which the Thunder rode into the third set to command the third and take the match in a sweep.
No Bluejay players hit double-digit kills, with
Jada Wiley tallying nine , while
Kali Phillips and
Blair Johnson had five each. Phillips also tallied five total blocks on the afternoon, while
Gianna Ptaszek had a team-high seven digs.Â
Wheaton took a 13-7 advantage halfway into set one, but an 8-1 run from the Jays knotted the set at 15-each. Needing one point to set up set point, Wheaton rallied three-straight to set up their own set-point, but a service error tied it at 24 setting up extra points. A serve error and a Johnson kill brought up set point for Elmhurst, but three-straight closing points for the Thunder allowed the hosts to take set one, 29-27.
With set two tied at 15, a 9-4 Bluejay run set up a 24-20 set point as Elmhurst looked to tie the match at one set each. However, five-straight points would put the Thunder ahead, and despite a
Bryanna Stanford kill to tie it at 25, Wheaton would grab the final two points for a 27-25 set two win. In the final set, the Thunder would take 11 of the first 12 points, and ended the set with an 8-1 run to take set three, 25-10, and the match, 3-0.
