NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team fell in a Saturday afternoon College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader against North Central College.
Elmhurst (12-16, 4-8 CCIW) struggled in game one, giving up 21 hits and 16 runs, but bounced back in game two with a two-run eighth inning to knot the game at two. However, the Cardinals (19-9, 7-5 CCIW) walked the game off with an RBI single in the ninth, giving North Central the sweep.
J.D. Knight started game one for Elmhurst, suffering his first loss of the season after giving up nine hits and nine runs (eight earned). The pitching staff bounced back in the late innings, as
Fox Weymouth,
Marty Fraga, and
Joseph Ingratta combined to throw three scoreless innings to wrap the game up.
At the dish,
Freddie March launched his fifth home run of the season in a 3-for-4 effort that included a pair of doubles.
In game two, a pitchers duel broke out as both starters went 7.0+ innings.
Cole Bozzi earned the start, pitching 7.2 innings and giving up just two runs, leaving the game with one out to go in the eighth after a two-run home run by the Cardinals put the home team up a pair.
The Bluejays fought back, with
Troy Taller knocking two runs in on a double down the left field line in the eighth inning to knot the game at two heading into the final frame. However,
Logan Leach allowed the winning run to cross the plate after a single dropped into center field, dropping the freshman reliever to 0-3 on the season.

Elmhurst heads to Kenosha, Wis. tomorrow, April 23, for a CCIW matchup against Carthage College at 1:00 p.m. CT.
