Bluejays Drop Heartbreaker at Augustana

RECAP

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team dropped a tight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup to Augustana College (Ill.), 7-6, Tuesday evening under the lights.

Elmhurst (12-14, 4-6 CCIW) tallied ten hits in the contest, leading the Vikings early before knotting the game late in the seventh inning. However, a two-out error from the Bluejays in the eighth inning allowed the go-ahead run to score for Augustana (23-6, 8-2 CCIW) to secure the victory on their home field. Errors plagued the Elmhurst defense, with the Bluejays committing six in the midweek matchup.

Trey Romay provided a spark for the Bluejay offense, going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, including the tying run in the seventh inning, while Freddie March added two RBI of his own on a homerun in the sixth inning.

Eric Zbinden got the start for the Bluejays, tossing three innings and giving up just one earned run to go along with four strikeouts. Zach Keplar had a nice outing out of the bullpen, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, but Logan Leach took the loss for Elmhurst to drop to 0-2 on the season.

Elmhurst jumped ahead early in the first inning, with Romay knocking in a run on a double play to lead 1-0, but the Vikings jumped back ahead 4-1 after a run in the second and three runs third inning. The Bluejays fought back in the fourth, getting two runs back off the bat of March with a two-run home run to left field, and an RBI single from Ryan Thrawl knotted the game at four.

Augustana answered in their half of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs to go ahead 6-4, but Romay again answered in the seventh with a two-RBI double to right-center field, tying the game at six. The Bluejays were set up to head to the ninth with the game knotted at six, but an error allowed a run to score in the eighth, and the bats could not fight back in the ninth, resulting in a 7-6 loss for Elmhurst.
