ELMHURST, Ill. – Keep up with all of the Elmhurst University athletic teams and take a look at the week ahead with the Bluejay Weekly.
TRACK AND FIELD
Three Elmhurst women's track athletes are set to compete at the 2023 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11, in Birmingham, Ala.
Ava David qualified for the national championships in the 200-meter and 400-meter,
Nakala Nadeau in the 60-meter hurdles, and
Alyssa Rafuse in the mile run.Â
All three of these athletes have broken school records this season. David broke her previous 200-meter time at the Wartburg Final Qualifier this past weekend with a 25.13 and her previous 400-meter time at the Aurora Grand Prix with a 56.26. Nadeau broke the 60-meter hurdle time at the North Central College Slick Invite by .37 seconds with a time of 8.76 seconds. Rafuse broke the school record in the mile run twice this season. Her fastest time was at the conference championship at Illinois Wesleyan University on Feb. 25 with a time of 4:57.59.
Preliminaries will occur on Friday, with the top ten qualifiers from prelims entering Saturday's national championship race where the top eight finishers earn all-american status. Nadeau races at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Rafuse at 2:50 p.m., and David at both 3:25 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., with all times listed in central time.Â
MEN'S LACROSSE
Last week, the men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 with a 15-14 victory over Centre College on Sunday, March 5 at Langhorst Field. The Bluejays were led by Ames who finished with six goals.Â
Jake Grebe added in two goals and three assists, while Spence chipped in one goal and three assists.Â
Sante Dybowski contributed three goals and one assist in the win as well.Â
Tony Vazquez picked up a game-high eight groundballs and won 13-of-30 faceoffs.Â
Noah Mickelson earned the win in goal for Elmhurst with 16 saves.
The Bluejays will play a pair of games this week, beginning on Wednesday, March 8 with a matchup against MSOE at 7:00 p.m. at Langhorst Field. The Bluejays will then hit the road on Saturday to face off against Albion College at 12:00 p.m. CT.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
The Elmhurst women's lacrosse team opened their 2023 season last week with a 2-15 defeat to Concordia University Wisconsin at Langhorst Field.Â
Andrea Murtland scored her first collegiate goal and the first goal of the season for the Bluejays with 1:18 remaining in the second quarter, whileÂ
Gracie Eastman tallied the other Elmhurst goal with 10 seconds left in the third quarter, andÂ
Corinna Salmon andÂ
Savannah Sannes combined for 17 saves for the Bluejays.
This week, the Bluejays stay at home for a contest against Bethel University (Ind.) at 4:00 p.m. CT at Langhorst Field on Tuesday, March 7.
BASEBALL
Bluejay baseball went 2-2 last weekend down in Jacksonville, Ill., gaining a pair of wins over Olivet College while dropping both matchups to Central College. After a huge weekend at the plate,
Trey Romay was tabbed the CCIW's Hitter of the Week after going 10-for-18 (.556) across four starts, tallying eight runs scored, 11 RBI's, three doubles, three home runs, and five stolen bases on the weekend. Against Olivet on Saturday, March 4, Romay went 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, a grand slam, and seven RBI's in the Bluejays' 14-6 victory. The Bluejays now stand at 3-4 overall on the year.
This weekend, the Bluejays head to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a doubleheader against Kalamazoo College at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. CT.Â
