ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University men's lacrosse team edged Centre College, 15-14, in its home-opener at Langhorst Field.
The Colonels struck first with a goal from Duncan MacDonald at the 9:13 mark in the first quarter. Elmhurst's
Kaden Ames responded with 6:06 remaining in the opening period to tie things up.
David Caldwell and Jay McCormick extended the Centre lead to 3-1 with back-to-back goals.
Eli Spence scored the final Bluejay goal of the first period to put his team within one goal heading into the second.
Both squads scored three and four goals respectively in the second and third quarters, which allowed Centre (4-1) to hold onto a one goal lead heading into the final period.
Elmhurst (3-0) outscored the Colonels 6-4 in the final quarter to remain undefeated.
The Bluejays were led by Ames who finished with six goals.
Jake Grebe added in two goals and three assists, while Spence chipped in one goal and three assists.
Sante Dybowski contributed three goals and one assist in the win as well.
Tony Vazquez picked up a game-high eight groundballs and won 13-of-30 faceoffs.
Will Hubbs led the way for the Colonels with five points off of two goals and three assists. Caldwell added in four goals and an assist, while Max Speers finished with a pair of goals and assists in the loss. Dylan Croft grabbed a team-high six groundballs and won 13-of-21 faceoffs.
Noah Mickelson earned the win in goal for Elmhurst with 16 saves, while Sammy Zickel collected 14 saves for the Colonels.
The Bluejays host the Milwaukee School of Engineering at Langhorst Field for their next matchup on Wednesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m.
