GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Elmhurst University men's lacrosse team topped Southwestern University, 15-13, in its first of two contests in Texas at Varsity Field on Wednesday evening.
The Pirates (6-5/2-1 HCLC) struck first with a goal from Gus Thompson at 12:53, before
Kaden Ames found the back of the net 30 seconds later to even the score to one apiece.
Southwestern scored back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead with 7:10 remaining in the opening quarter. The Bluejays found an answer in
Jake Grebe who netted his first goal of the contest and helped cut the deficit to just one with 4:37 left to play.
Both squads went back-and-forth scoring for the rest of the first period, but the Pirates held a one goal advantage over the Bluejays, 5-4, heading into the second.
Sante Dybowski tied things up with a goal for Elmhurst in the first 33 seconds of the second quarter. Blake Sitterly's goal put his team ahead, 6-5, with 8:24 left in the first half, but Grebe rattled off two more goals to put Elmhurst ahead 7-6.
The Bluejays led 9-8 at the midway point.
Elmhurst (6-1) outscored Southwestern 6-5 in the second half in route to victory.
Nate Duncan led the Pirates with six points featuring three goals and three assists. Tyler Johnson added in a pair of goals, while Cade McDonald and Matthew Swandal chipped in one goal and one assist in the loss.
The Bluejays were led by
Eli Spence with three goals and three assists. Grebe finished with three goals and one assist, while
Ryan Swank,
Chris Haycock, Ames and Dybowski each contributed a pair of goals in the win.
Tony Vazquez won 20-of-28 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 11 groundballs.
Noah Mickelson earned the win in goal for Elmhurst with 11 saves, while Will Walsh collected 15 saves for Southwestern.
The Bluejays take on Whittier College in their final game in Texas on Saturday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m.
