Bluejays Win Nail-Biter at Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Elmhurst University men's lacrosse team took down Hope College, 12-11, at Van Andel Stadium.

The Bluejays (2-0) opened up the contest with back-to-back goals from Eli Spence and Ryan Swank. The Dutchmen responded with 4:57 left in the first period with a goal from Andrew Lanham.

Hope (0-1) took a narrow 3-2 lead over the Bluejays by scoring two goals to start the second period, but Elmhurst responded by rattling off four consecutive goals to head into the locker room up 6-3.

The Dutchmen held the Bluejays scoreless in the third quarter and scored five unanswered goals to take an 8-6 lead heading into the final period.

Both squads went back-and-forth scoring goals in the fourth with Hope maintaining its two-goal lead, until the final 2:15 of play where the Bluejays scored three unanswered goals to earn the road victory.

Elmhurst was led by Spence with seven points featuring five goals and two assists. Jake Grebe and Swank added in two goals apiece, while Kaden Ames and Sante Dybowski contributed one goal and one assist in the win. Tony Vazquez won 7-of-16 faceoffs, while teammate Brenden Crouse won 8-of-11. Vazquez and Crouse each picked up five groundballs for the Bluejays.

Sam Bowen led the way for Hope netting six goals and dishing out one assist. Andon Rieger chipped in a pair of goals, while Michael Mann finished with one goal and one assist in the loss. Bowen grabbed a team-high eight groundballs, while Caden Brainard won 8-of-16 faceoffs for the Dutchmen.

Noah Mickelson earned the win in goal for Elmhurst with 18 saves and picked up a game-high 13 groundballs, while John Shea collected nine saves for Hope.

The Bluejays welcome Centre College to Langhorst Field for their home-opener on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m.
