Women's Tennis Wins Pair to Open Season

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Elmhurst University women's tennis team kicked off its 2022 season by scoring a pair of wins in Iowa. The Bluejays toppled Marian University 7-2 and then clipped Cornell College 5-4. 

ELMHURST 7, MARIAN 2 - Elmhurst opened the season with a 7-2 victory over Marian. The Bluejays swept the three doubles matches and scored wins in four singles matches. 

In doubles play, Elmhurst's top pairing of Jolene Neuhalfen and June Bering scored an 8-7 win over Aeryn Olson and Katrina Pokorny at No. 1. Silvia Barak and Brynn Rubacky followed with an 8-3 win over Abby Okon and Brooklyn Torres at No. 2 doubles. Elmhurst's pairing of Megan Engstrom and Alitza Munoz blanked Julia Loomans and Melana Brunton 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. 

In singles play, Neuhalfen defeated Olson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 while Bering followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Okon at No.2 Rubacky added a win at No. 4, defeating Loomans 6-1, 6-0. Engstrom added the final win for the Bluejays, scoring a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Brunton at No. 5 singles.

ELMHURST 5, CORNELL 4 - Elmhurst posted a perfect 2-0 record on the day by edging Cornell College 5-4. The Bluejays won two doubles matches while splitting the six singles contests. 

In doubles play, Neuhalfen and Bering upended Makayla Johnson and Audrey Small 8-5 at No. 1. Barak and Rubacky followed with an 8-4 victory over Ashley Mink and Josalin McKeever at No. 2 doubles. 

In singles play, Neuhalfen, Bering and Engstrom all scored wins for Elmhurst. Neuhalfen defeated Johnson 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 while Bering upended Mink 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Engstrom finished the win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over McKeever at No. 5 singles. 

Elmhurst plays Buena Vista University tomorrow.
