CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team held off a ninth-inning rally from North Park University to topple the Vikings 4-3.
Elmhurst (13-20/4-11 CCIW) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. With two on and two out,
Trey Romay delivered a RBI single to put Elmhurst up 1-0.
Paul Fomby followed with a single up the middle to make the score 2-0. Romay later scored on a wild pitch to stake Elmhurst to a 3-0 lead.
Freddie March tacked on a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh to increase Elmhurst's lead to 4-0.
North Park (12-22/5-10 CCIW) scored a run in the bottom of the eight on a Bobby Bartlett RBI to make the score 4-1. The Vikings started the ninth inning with a triple and a double to make the score 4-2. Back-to-back two out singles brought the Vikings to within a run and left runners on the corners, but
Jay Palmer entered and struck out Tim Fauth to end the contest.
J.D. Knight made the start and picked up the win for the Bluejays, pitching 7.2 innings and allowing just five hits and one run. He walked one and struck out two. Palmer picked up the save, striking out the only batter he faced.
Elmhurst travels to Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday, May 4.
