WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst University baseball team came up two runs short on the road, falling 11-9 at Carroll University.
Elmhurst (8-10/1-3 CCIW) grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second after
Trey Romay doubled home a pair of runs. Carroll (10-12/3-1 CCIW) answered back with three runs in the second and three more in the third to open up a 7-2 lead.
The Bluejays reclaimed the lead after scoring a combined six runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Freddie March singled home a run in the fourth and
Troy Taller ripped a two-run double to make the score 7-5. The Bluejays tied the score in the fifth after RBI singles from Romay and
Drew Raspolich.
Elmhurst moved in front 8-7 in the top of the sixth after
Zachary Hafner scored on a wild pitch.
THe Bluejays' lead was short-lived as Carroll scored three times in the bottom of the sixth. Brad Vosters tied the score with a solo home run. Nick Angus put the Pioneers in front with a two-run homer later in the inning. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the eight to move in front 11-8.
Elmhurst took advantage of a Carroll error to score a run in the ninth to make the final score 11-9.
Romay powered the Bluejays at the plate, finishing 5-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Jonathan Mays added three hits and scored two runs while Hafner, March, Taller, Raspolich and
Trevor Lorek added two hits apiece.
Jay Palmer took the loss in relief for the Bluejays, surrendering four hits and three runs in 3.1 innings of relief. He walked one and struck out four.
Cole Bozzi tossed 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and one run while fanning three.
Elmhurst hosts Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, April 9.
