KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst University baseball team closed out its three-game weekend series against Carthage College by falling to the Firebirds 12-6.
Carthage (10-21/4-9 CCIW) broke open a 3-3 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Elmhurst (10-17/3-9 CCIW) pulled to within a run in the sixth, but the Firebirds scored the final five runs of the game to pull away for the win.
Carthage scored a run in the first and tacked on two more in the third to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead. Elmhurst slugged its way back into the game in the middle innings.
Paul Fomby blasted a solo homer in the fourth and
Jesse James cracked a solo shot in the fifth.
Trevor Lorek singled home a run in the fifth knot the score at 3-3.
Carthage scored four times in the fifth to move in front 7-3. PJ Moser delivered the big blow with a three-run homer. Elmhurst answered back with three runs in the top of the sixth to close to within a run.
Troy Taller knocked in a run with a RBI double.
Drew Raspolich followed with a run-scoring single and James added a RBI groundout to cap the Bluejays' scoring in the sixth.
The Firebirds added a run in the seventh to stretch their lead to 8-6. Carthage added a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to pull away for the six-run victory.
Bryce Pryblinski paced Carthage in the win, finishing 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs.
J.D. Knight made the start and took the loss for the Bluejays. He worked four innings allowing seven hits and four runs. He walked one and fanned two. Dante Guarascio picked up the win for Carthage after throwing 5.1 innings and allowing five hits and six runs.
Elmhurst hosts Marian University on Tuesday, April 26.
