Baseball Falls to Augustana 9-5

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University baseball team suffered a 9-5 loss to Augustana College after the Vikings scored four runs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie.

Elmhurst fell to 9-15 overall and 2-7 in the CCIW while Augustana improved to 20-6 overall and 5-3 in the CCIW.

Paul Fomby started the scoring for Elmhurst, blasting a solo homer to center field in the bottom of the first. Elmhurst made it 3-0 in the second on Trevor Lorek's two-run double.

Augustana answered back with three runs on only two hits in the third inning to knot the score at 3-3. The Vikings took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a Brett Benedetti two-out RBI double. Elmhurst evened the score at 4-4 after Trey Romay doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Augustana moved back in front on a Matt Ozanic RBI single in the sixth. Elmhurst loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and scored the tying run on a bases loaded walk to Trevor Lorek. But a strikeout and pop out sent the game to the ninth inning even at 5-5.

In the ninth, Augustana loaded the bases with one out. The Bluejays got the second out on a fielder's choice play at the plate, but the Vikings went in front after a bases loaded wild pitch allowed a run to score. A bloop two-run single from Matt Campbell gave the Vikings a three-run cushion and a wild pitch allowed Augustan to score its fourth run of the inning.

Troy Taller led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing with three of Elmhurst's 11 hits. Drew Raspolich added two hits and scored two runs.

Cole Bozzi took the loss in relief, allowing five hits and five runs in 3.2 innings of work. He walked three and struck out four.
