NAPERVILLE, Ill. –
Jaysn Miller and
Alex Kielion combined to allow just one earned run over nine innings while leading the Elmhurst University baseball team to a 9-4 win over eighth-ranked North Central College.
Elmhurst (9-14/2-6 CCIW) jumped on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the second. A balk on North Central allowed
Troy Taller to score to give Elmhurst a quick 1-0 lead.
Jonathan Mays drove in a run with a groundout to give the Bluejays a two-run cushion.
North Central (20-6/7-1 CCIW) cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third, but Elmhurst quickly tacked on two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Drew Raspolich singled home a run and Mays drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 4-1.
The Cardinals scored a run in the fourth, but a wild pitch allowed
Trey Romay to score in the bottom of the fourth and keep Elmhurst's lead at three at 5-2. The Cardinals scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but a passed ball on North Central allowed James to score in the bottom of the inning to put Elmhurst up 6-3.
Pat Beverly drove in a run for the Cardinals in the seventh to pull the Cardinals to within two at 6-4, but Romay knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to stretch Elmhurst's lead back to three.
Michael Campanaro tacked on two insurance runs with a two-run single in the eighth to make the final score 9-4.
Elmhurst totaled 10 hits in the win with Romay, Taller, Raspolich and Campanaro tallying two hits apiece. Campanaro and Mays both drove in two runs each.
Miller and Kielion combined to pitch all nine innings for the Bluejays. Miller made the start and picked up the win, working five innings and allowing just three runs (one earned). He scattered six hits and two walks while striking out three. Kielion tossed the final four innings to record the save. He allowed just three hits and one unearned run while walking three and fanning three.
Elmhurst hosts Augustana College on Saturday, April 16, at Butterfield Park.
