JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader slugfest to Grinnell, falling 22-10 and 18-9.
GRINNELL 22, ELMHURST 10 (Game One) - Grinnell jumped out to a 2-0 lead by a
Trey Romay homer in the bottom of the third cut the lead in half. The Pioneers added a run in the fourth to increase their lead to 3-1, but Elmhurst took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to RBI walks to
Freddie March and
Zachary Hafner.Â
Elmhurst's lead was short lived as Grinnell scored four in the fifth and six more in the seventh to blow the game open before pulling away for the 22-10 win.Â
Elmhurst collected 15 hits in the contest.
Troy Taller finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs in the loss.
Jonathan Mays also recorded two hits and scored a run for Elmhurst.Â
Alex Kielion too the loss for Elmhurst, allowing just four runs and seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.
GRINNELL 18, ELMHURST 9 (Game Two) -Â Grinnell raced out to a 7-0 lead before Elmhurst answered back with a seven-spot in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.
Trevor Lorek doubled home a run and Mays added a run-scoring single to start the Bluejays' frame. Taller knocked in two runs with a single. Hafner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. An error on Grinnell allowed two more runs to come in and knot the score at 7-7.
The tie did not last as Grinnell added three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh, four in the eighth and two more in the ninth to pull away for the win.
March totaled two of Elmhurst's seven hits on the day and also scored two runs.Â
J.T. Oie took the loss in relief, allowing just one run in 0.2 innings of work.
Jaysn Miller made the start and worked 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs while walking two and fanning three.Â
Elmhurst takes on Grinnell on Sunday, March 6 in the final game of a three-game series.Â
