GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Elmhurst University men's lacrosse team ran its winning streak to eight and closed out its non-conference schedule with a 13-7 win at Calvin University.
Ben Luke got things started on offense for the Bluejays by scoring his first goal of the game in the first 42 seconds. Calvin's (6-4) Thomas Smith tied the game up at one apiece with 11:58 left to play in the opening period. Elmhurst (8-2) closed out the first quarter with three unanswered goals, one from
Ethan Stepanek and a pair from
Parker O'Leary.
The Knights cut the lead down to two after scoring the sole second quarter goal to head into halftime trailing Elmhurst 4-2.
Elmhurst's
Marcus Yandall tallied his first goal of the contest with 12:58 left in the third quarter, but two goals by Calvin's Nick Giffith and one by Josh Moyer evened the score at five heading into the final quarter.
Sante Dybowski gave the Bluejays a brief one goal lead to start off the fourth quarter, but Smith responded quickly for the Knights, tying the game up for the final time at six with 13:28 left in the contest. The Bluejays outscored the Knights 7-1 in the last 13 minutes of play to cruise to their eighth consecutive victory.
Luke led the way for Elmhurst with four goals and one assist, while Yandall finished with three goals and one assist.
Cullen Nordeman chipped in one goal and led the team with three assists. O'Leary tallied three goals in the win, while
Jake Grebe contributed two assists.
Noah Mickelson picked up a game-high 14 groundballs for the Bluejays.
Ryan Camarata caused four turnovers and totaled three ground balls for the Bluejays.
Smith and Giffith led Calvin with a pair of goals each. Chase Sparling dished out two assists and grabbed six groundballs. Robert Miner, Josh Moyer and Drew Stoneburner each scored one goal for the Knights in the loss. Sparling also won 11-of-19 faceoff attempts.
Evan Griffin collected 20 saves for Calvin, while Mickelson earned the win for Elmhurst with 15 saves.
The Bluejays return home to Langhorst Field to open up conference play against Carroll University on Saturday April 2 at 1 p.m.
