Baseball Team Splits Two In Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Elmhurst University baseball team opened its spring break road trip to Florida by splitting a pair of contests. The Bluejays fell 11-0 to Benedictine University to start the day, but bounced back to defeat Hamilton College 15-6.
 
BENEDICTINE 11, ELMHURST 0 – Benedictine totaled 16 hits and scored in four different innings to defeat the Bluejays 11-0. Kevin Bushnell started the scoring with an RBI single for the Eagles in the third. Bushnell sparked a three-run fifth inning for Benedictine with a two-run single. The Eagles added three runs in the eight and four runs in the ninth to put the game away.
 
Jonathan Mays, Trey Romay, Paul Fomby and James Neal all collected hits for the Bluejays in the loss.
 
Bushnell and Anthony Lenza knocked in three runs apiece for the Eagles.
 
Alex Kielion made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst, working 7.1 innings and allowing nine hits and three earned runs. He walked one while fanning seven. Justin Sosa picked up the win for Benedictine, tossing six innings and allowing four runs and two walks while striking out nine.
 
ELMHURST 15, HAMILTON 6 – Elmhurst's bats came to life against Hamilton, totaling 16 hits and scoring 15 runs in the victory.
 
The Bluejays broke a scoreless tie with a six run fifth inning, taking advantage of a Hamilton error to plate six unearned runs. Freddie March delivered the big blow in the inning, cracking a two-run blast to cap the inning.
 
Elmhurst added two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to pull away for the nine-run victory.
 
March finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and driven in. Paul Fomby added three hits, scored three runs and knocked in two. Trey Romay and Drew Raspolich added two hits apiece. Both players scored twice and knocked a run each. Zack Kolb and Dylan Elwood drove in two runs each.
 
Jaysn Miller picked up the win for Elmhurst, tossing seven strong innings and allowing just five hits. He allowed two runs while striking out nine.
 
Elmhurst (5-5) takes on Union College in a doubleheader on Monday, March 21, starting at 1:30 p.m. (EST).
