WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Paul Fomby and
Freddie March homered three times apiece while helping the Elmhurst baseball team sweep a doubleheader from Union College. The Bluejays took game one 16-6 and finished the sweep with a 17-10 win in game two.
March's three home runs on the day gives him 11 for the season, putting him at the top of the national leader board in home runs. He's also ranked among the national leaders in RBIs with 28. Elmhurst improved to 7-5 on the year with the two victories.
ELMHURST 16, UNION 6 (Game One) - Elmhurst totaled 16 hits while battering Union 16-6 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Elmhurst smacked five homers on the day with March and
Paul Fomby homering two times apiece and
Trey Romay also leaving the park.
Trailing 2-1 after three innings, the Bluejays broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. Elmhurst tacked on three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Fomby and March finished with identical stat lines of two homers, three runs scored and three driven in.
Zachary Hafner finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Zach Kolb finished 3-for-4 with a team-leading four RBIs. Romay and
Trevor Lorek added two hits and an RBI apiece. Lorek also scored three runs for Elmhurst.
Noah Jordan picked up the win for the Bluejays, improving to 2-0 on the season. Jordan worked 5.2 innings and allowed six hits and just one earned run. He walked one and struck out six.
Joseph Ingratta finished off the final 1.1 innings, allowing just three hits while not allowing a run.
ELMHURST 17, UNION 10 (Game Two) - Elmhurst scored 12 runs in the first three innings before pulling away for the seven-run victory.
March sparked a six-run inning for Elmhurst in the second by smacking a three-run homer. Elmhurst tacked on five runs in the third keyed by a two-run single from Romay and a three-run blast from Fomby.
March finished 2-for-3 with three runs driven in and two runs scored. Fomby added two hits, scored a run and knocked in three.
Trevor Lorek added two hits, scored three runs and drove in two. Romay added two RBIs and scored two runs for the Bluejays.
J.D. Knight made the start for the Bluejays and picked up the win. Knight tossed five innings, surrendering 13 hits and six runs. He wlaked one and fanned three.
Elmhurst plays Hope College tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
