ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University men's lacrosse team fell in its home-opener to Hope College, dropping the contest 17-13.
The Flying Dutch jumped out to a 2-0 lead before
Marcus Yandall scored his fifth goal of the season and put the Bluejays on the board.
Elmhurst (0-2) tied the game up at two apiece with a goal by
Sante Dybowski from
Ben Luke in a man-up situation. With just two seconds left in the first quarter, a Zach Wiggins' goal gave Hope a 3-2 lead.
The Bluejays scored the first two goals to start the second quarter, before the Flying Dutch outscored Elmhurst 6-1 to close out the half.Â
Both squads scored four goals in the third and fourth quarters, but the Bluejays were unable to overcome the four-goal deficit from the first half.
Hope (1-0) was led by Jack Radzville with five goals and two assists. Following closely behind was Wiggins with five goals and one assist, while Michael Mann finished with two goals and five assists in the win.
Elmhurst was led by
Sante Dybowski with five goals. Yandall and Luke each added in a pair of goals and one assist, while
Jake Grebe finished with three assists.
Harry Meredith and Luke tied for a team-high five groundballs.
The Bluejays were nearly perfect in clear attempts, successfully completing 22-of-23 compared to Hope's 16-of-22. The Flying Dutch fared better in face-offs winning 22 to Elmhurst's 10.
Elmhurst's Meredith collected saves, while Hope goalkeeper, John Shea, earned the win with nine saves.
The Bluejays host the University of Northwestern at Langhorst Field for their next contest on Friday, March 4.
