Women's Track Takes Second at Carthage Invite

KENOSHA, Wis. – Competing for the first time in 2022, the Elmhurst University women's track and field team placed second and out nine squads at Carthage College's Firebird Opener.
 
Competing without it's entire team, the Bluejays still had a strong showing, totaling 72.5 points to finish second. Carroll finished first overall with 121.5 points.
 
The Bluejays scored 26 points in the sprints. The Bluejays racked up 16 points in the 55 meters with five Bluejays earning top-eight finishes. Ava David placed third in 7.484 seconds while Huda Hussaini finished fifth in 7.52 seconds. Hanna Matuszewski placed sixth in 7.69 seconds while Francesca Scarabaggio (7.73 seconds) and Hannah Schwartz (7.77 seconds) placed seventh and eighth, respectively.  The Bluejays' 4x400 squad of David, Stacia Landry, Stefani Camaci and Sadie Hartmann took third overall with a time of 4:35.37.
 
The Bluejays added 10 points in the 200 meters thanks to three top-eight finishes. David added a third-place finish in the 200 meters in 26.50 seconds while Matuszewski finished fifth in 27.49 seconds and Marisa Brown placed seventh in 27.85 seconds.
 
Elmhurst added nine points in the 800 meters with a pir of top-five finishes. Esther Brown was the first Bluejay to cross the finish line, completing the race in 2:34.70. Venezia Munoz finished right behind, taking fifth in 2:35.32.
 
Two Bluejays earned top-10 finishes in the mile run. Katie Nalley finished eighth in 5:51.69 while Annie Bieda finished less than a second behind, placing ninth in 5:52.40.
 
The Bluejays also had solid performances in the jumps. Amanda Lams tallied 16 points in a pair of events. Lams scored eight team points with a third-place finish in the long jump after recording a school-record leap of 5.37 meters. She added eight points with a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 11.18 meters. Scarabaggio added an eighth-place finish with a jump of 4.96 meters. Mallory Burke added a sixth-place finish in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.47 meters on her first attempt. Sadie Hartmann and Sarah Stephens finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the high jump after also clearing a height of 1.47 meters. Hartmann cleared the height on her second attempt while Stephens cleared on her final attempt.
 
Kelsey Becker scored five team points in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.45 meters to place fourth overall.
 
Elmhurst will compete at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational on January 28.
