Bluejays Come Up Short Against Carroll

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University baseball team's rally attempt came up just short in a 7-5 loss to Carroll University at Butterfield Park .

Carroll (16-14/10-12 CCIW) scored a run in the third on a double steal to open up a 1-0 advantage. The Bluejays responded immediately, plating two runs in the bottom of the inning to move in front 2-1. A Carroll error helped the Bluejays score their first run and Lorenzo Farino singled home the second run of the inning.
 
Carroll broke things open in the fifth, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs to take a 6-2 lead.
 
Elmhurst (13-17/9-14 CCIW) pulled to within a run in the seventh. Tyler Kledzik singled home a run and Trey Romay followed with an RBI single to make the score 6-4. Farino added a run on sacrifice fly to make the score 6-5. Carroll extended its lead to 7-5 on Mitch Massino's two-out single in the eighth.
 
Kledzik led off the ninth with a double for the Bluejays, but Jake Nitcsh retired the next three batters to earn the save and help Carroll escape with the 7-5 victory.
 
Kledzik led the Bluejays at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Farino knocked in two runs while Romay added two hits for the Bluejays.
 
J.D. Knight took the loss for the Bluejays, working 4.2 innings and allowing seven hits and five earned runs. He walked four and struck out four. Cole Bozzi pitched well in relief, finishing the final 4.1 innings and allowing just two hits and one unearned run. He walked two and fanned four.
 
Elmhurst hosts Dominican University on Tuesday, April 27, at 3:00 p.m.
