Bluejays Split Two With Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Elmhurst University baseball team split a round doubleheader with Carroll University. The Bluejays won the opening contest 15-12 before falling 7-2 in game two.
 
Elmhurst moved to 13-15 overall and 9-13 in the CCIW with the split while Carroll moved to 15-14 overall and 9-12 in the CCIW.
 
ELMHURST 15, CARROLL 12 (Game One) – Elmhurst scored runs in seven innings and outlasted Carroll 15-12 in a slugfest.
 
The Bluejays grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a Paul Fomby RBI single in the first. Carroll pulled even in the bottom of the first, but Freddie March gave the Bluejays a 2-1 lead in the second with a solo homer. Carroll answered back with two runs in the second, grabbing a 3-2 lead in the process.
 
Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the third. Lorenzo Farino, Carter Truong and Troy Taller all drove in runs in the inning for the Bluejays.

Elmhurst extended its lead to 8-3 in the fourth after Trey Romay cracked a two-run homer. The Bluejays made it 11-3 in the fifth after March blasted his second homer of the game, a three-run shot to left.
 
Carroll answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and then added four more runs in the sixth to pull even at 11-11. Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the seventh after March doubled home a run.  Carter Truong cracked a three-run homer in the eighth to put the Bluejays up 15-11. Carroll scored a run in the eighth but went down in order in the ninth to make the final score 15-12.
 
March led the Bluejays at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored and five driven in. Troung added two hits and drove in four while Farino, Romay and Kevin Johlie all added two hits apiece in the victory.
 
Jaysn Miller made the start and worked five innings, surrendering 10 hits and seven earned runs. He walked two and fanned four. Noah Jordan earned the win in relief, tossing four innings and allowing three hits and three runs. He walked two and struck out four.
 
CARROLL 7, ELMHURST 2 (Game Two) – Carroll earned the doubleheader split in game two by defeating the Bluejays' 7-2.
 
Carroll broke a scoreless contest in the bottom of the fourth behind a pair of long balls. Dylan Callahan cracked a two-run homer to start the scoring and Justin Baker added a solo shot in the inning to stake the Pioneers to a 3-0 lead. Alec Honickel singled home a run in the sixth to increase Carroll's lead to 4-0.
 
Elmhurst ended the shutout and took a run back in the top of the seventh. Kevin Johlie delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to put the Bluejays on the board and cut Carroll's lead down to 4-1. Carroll answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead up to six at 7-1. The Bluejays made it 7-2 in the eighth inning after Freddie March double home a run with two outs, but Elmhurst came no closer as Carroll closed the game out for the five-run victory.
 
Johlie led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 on the day.
 
Joseph Kalish made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst. Kalish worked seven innings allowing seven runs and 10 hits. He struck out three while not issuing a walk.
 
Curtis Sheahan went the distance for Carroll, limiting the Bluejays to only two runs and 11 hits. He walked one while striking out seven.
 
Elmhurst hosts Carroll at Butterfield Park tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
