DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team came up two runs short in a 7-5 road loss at Millikin University.
The Bluejays slipped to 11-12 overall and 7-10 in the CCIW while Millikin improved to 17-4 overall and 10-3 in league play.
Millikin jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Bluejays pulled even with one swing in the third. The Bluejays loaded the bases with one out and
Lorenzo Farino ripped a double to right center to clear the bases and tie the score at 3-3.
The tie did not last as Millikin took a 4-3 lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the third. The Big Blue added a pair of runs on an RBI single from Frank Bryan and a run-scoring double from Garrett Fritz. The Big Blue plated another run in the sixth on a wild pitch to go up 7-3.
Elmhurst made one last push in the top of the ninth, cutting into the lead with a two-run single from
Kevin Johlie to make the score 7-5. Elmhurst had the tying runs on base, but a strikeout and fly out ended the Bluejays' scoring threat and the game.
Elmhurst was limited to just four hits in the contest and Johlie collected half of them.
Noah Jordan took the loss from the mound, working 4.2 innings and allowing nine hits and six earned runs. He walked one and struck out four. Adam Zuk picked up the win for the Big Blue, tossing seven innings and allowing three hits and three runs. He walked two and fanned 11.
Elmhurst hosts North Park University on Saturday, April 17.
