The Elmhurst University Department of Athletics unveiled today it's new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan.

The plan focuses on department-wide initiatives for student-athletes, coaches, athletics staff and the Bluejay community. The initiatives are designed to foster an environment of diversity and inclusion in which all members of the Bluejay athletics community are recognized for their unique contributions to the Elmhurst community, treated with equity and respect, and encouraged to use their positions and platforms to create a more just and equitable experience within and beyond the Elmhurst Department of Athletics.

"I am very pleased to share with Bluejay nation the important work that is being done in our department around diversity, equity, and inclusion," said Elmhurst Director of Athletics Wendy McManus. "I would also like to thank our committee members comprised of student-athletes, staff, and campus administrators for their continued efforts in bring our plan together."

The plan features four main priorities:
  1. Recruit, retain and graduate academically and athletically talented student-athletes from underrepresented groups at a rate equal to or greater than that of the overall University undergraduate population.
  2. Seek a diverse candidate pool for all positions, in particular, coaching and administrative staff positions.
  3. Establish a welcoming climate that enhances the educational and work experience for all members of the Department of Athletics.
  4. Foster opportunities for community outreach and service related to equity and inclusion on campus, in local communities, within the CCIW and in NCAA Division III.
"A lot of work, thoughtful dialogue, and education has happened this past summer and fall regarding DEI within the Department of Athletics," said McManus. "Our action plan reflects important steps for facilitating positive change for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff that our department is committed to."
