Box Score WAUKESHA, Wis.- The Elmhurst Women's Basketball team fell to Carroll University 79-56 to open the 2021 season.
The Bluejays got off to a slow start, trailing the Pioneers 16-6 at the end of the first quarter. After an Elmhurst bucket at the beginning of the second quarter, Carroll ripped off a 15-0 run, giving the Pioneers a commanding 31-8 lead with five minutes left in the first half. The Bluejays answered back with an 8-0 run of their own to lower the Pioneers' lead to 38-19 heading into the locker room.
Mia Riese led the Bluejays at the end of the first half with seven points while hitting 5-5 from the foul line.
After trading shots most of the third quarter, the Bluejays found themselves down 25 points as the Pioneers went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Bluejays continued to trade shots but it was not enough as the Pioneers held onto win their first game of the season.
The Bluejays were led by
Lily Greifenstein's nine points and two rebounds.
Marissa Urso, Elana Cabrera, and
Mia Riese added seven points apiece and combined for nine rebounds. The Bluejays shot 32 percent (17-of-52) from the field and 17-of-24 from the free throw line.
The Pioneers were led by Katie Evan's 21 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. She was assisted by Katie Rohner's 16 points and eight rebounds. Kaylan Stefka added 14 points and seven rebounds of her own. Kate Christian added eight assists on the night as well. The Pioneers shot (28-of-65) 43 percent from the field, 39 percent from beyond the arc, and 14-of-24 from the foul line.
The Bluejays will look to capture their first win in their home-opener against Carroll when the two teams rematch on Saturday, January 30 at 2:00 P.M.
