Volleyball Team Split Pair at La Crosse Quad

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Elmhurst volleyball team wrapped up its stay at the two-day University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Quadrangular by splitting a pair of matches. The Bluejays defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College 3-1 to open play before losing a tightly-contested 3-0 contest to St. Norbert College.
 
Elmhurst moved to 5-9 on the season with the split.
 
ELMHURST 3, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 1 – Elmhurst notched its fifth win of the season with a  25-15, 26-28, 25-19, 25-20 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College.
 
Elmhurst never trailed in the opening set, racing out to a 20-10 lead before cruising to the 25-14 win. The second set was a back-and-forth affair with eight lead changes and 13 ties. The Bluejays held set points at 25-24 and 25-25 but could not close out the set. Wisconsin Lutheran scored the final three points to even the match at a set apiece.
 
Elmhurst turned a 10-8 deficit into a an 18-12 lead thanks to a 10-2 run in the third set. The Bluejays closed out the set at 25-19 to move in front two sets to one. Elmhurst fell behind 11-9 in the fourth set but used a 9-4 run to open up an 18-15 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran pulled to within a point at 20-19 but Elmhurst finished the match on a 5-1 run to put away the Warriors.
 
Elmhurst hit. 289 for the contest with 51 kills and 12 errors in 135 swings. Payton Froats led the Bluejays with 14 kills and five blocks. Emily Duis added 11 kills and four blocks while Bailey Brouwer finished with eight kills and three blocks. Ellie Burzlaff added seven kills for Elmhurst on offense. Valerie Thomas posted a team-best 22 digs while Taylor Zurliene finished with 16. Hannah Horn tallied a season-high 38 assists in the victory.
 
Carly Heuer and Mercedes Pye totaled 11 kills apiece to pace Wisconsin Lutheran in the loss.
 
ST. NORBERT 3, ELMHURST 1 – Elmhurst dropped to 5-9 on the year following a 27-25, 28-26, 25-20 loss to St. Norbert College.
 
The first set was extremely tight and featured eight ties and four lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points in the set. Elmhurst held a 24-23 and a 25-24 lead but could not wrap up the set. St. Norbert pulled even at 25-25 and back-to-back Elmhurst errors gave the Green Knights the opening set at 27-25.
 
The Bluejays jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second only for St. Louis to move in front at 14-11 following a 9-2 run. Elmhurst battled back to pull even at 23-23. The Bluejays had a set point at 24-23 and another at 26-25, but St. Norbert won the final three points to close out the set 28-26.
 
Elmhurst led 16-15 in the third, but St. Norbert used a 8-2 run to open up a 23-18 lead before putting the set and the match away.
 
Brouwer powered Elmhurst in the loss, finishing with 15 kills while hitting .400 for the match. Duis added five kills and four blocks while Kayla Mast finished with seven kills. Hannah Horn totaled 26 assists while Zurliene finished with 13 digs and two aces. Thomas added 11 digs for the Bluejays.
 
Elmhurst begins CCIW play by traveling to North Park on September 25, 2019.
