Volleyball Team Downs North Park in CCIW Opener

CHICAGO, Ill. - Five Bluejays totaled eight kills or more to lead the Elmhurst volleyball team to a 25-10, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15 road win over North Park University. 

Elmhurst upped its record to 6-9 overall while winning its CCIW opener (1-0). 

The Bluejays rolled over the Vikings in the opening set, grabbing a 4-3 lead and never looking back. Elmhurst opened up a six-point cushion at 12-6 and continued to pull away, cruising to the first set win at 25-10.

North Park battled back in the second, grabbing a 2-1 lead and never trailing for the rest of the set. The Vikings led by as many as seven points at 18-1. Elmhurst came no closer than three points at 24-21, but the Vikings put the set away at 25-21.

Elmhurst fell behind 8-6 in the third set, but the Bluejays ripped off six straight points to open up a 12-8 lead. North Park cut the Bluejays' lead down to two at 16-14, but Elmhurst finished the set on a 9-4 run to take a 2-1 lead. 

The Bluejays raced out to a 10-5 lead in the fourth and never allowed North Park to get rolling. Elmhurst led by eight points at 17-9 before coasting to the 25-15 win to put away the match.

Elmhurst hit .275 for the contest with 53 kills and 17 errors in 131 swings. Three Bluejays reached double figures in kills in the victory. Bailey Brouwer powered Elmhurst's offense with 13 kills to go along with 12 digs and three aces. Kayla Mast added 12 kills and 10 digs while Taylor Zurliene finished with 10 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Payton Froats added nine kills while Emily Duis totaled eight kills and five blocks. Hannah Horn tallied a team-leading 41 assists to go along with 11 digs. Emily Finkbeiner added 10 digs for the Bluejays.

Kailyn Matthews led the Vikings with 11 kills and six digs. Christina Gatta finished with 17 assists and seven digs while Bianca Tomuta tallied a team-best 16 digs. 

Elmhurst hosts Dominican University and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday, September 28.
