LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team rallied from a set down to upend Lake Forest College 25-16, 19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-7 in five sets.
Elmhurst upped its record to 4-7 on the season while Lake Forest slipped to 6-7 overall.
The Bluejays grabbed a 5-1 lead in the opening set and never trailed the rest of the way. Lake Forest closed to within a point at 14-13, but Elmhurst finished the set on an 11-3 run to grab the early lead.
Lake Forest answered back in the second set, finishing the set on a 6-1 run after leading 19-18. The third set was even at 23-23 but a block from Madison Stevens and Olivia Drevs followed by a kill from Drevs gave the Foresters a 2-1 lead.
The Bluejays jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the fourth set only to have Lake Forest pull to within two at 16-14. The Bluejays built their lead to eight at 22-14, but the Foresters pulled back to within two points at 23-21. A kill from
Payton Froats put the set away for the Bluejays and forced a decisive fifth set.
Elmhurst raced out to a 5-1 lead in te fifth and never looked back. The Foresters managed to pull to within three points at 10-7, but the Bluejays won the final five points to put the match away.
Elmhurst hit .171 for the match with 54 kills and 25 errors in 170 swings. Four Bluejays reached double figures in kills in the match.
Bailey Brouwer led the Bluejays in the win with 13 kills and four digs. Froats added 11 kills and four blocks while
Taylor Zurliene totaled 10 kills and 16 digs.
Kayla Mast finished with 10 kills and 17 digs.
Emily Duis added six kills and four blocks.
Valerie Thomas led the team in digs with 33 while
Emily Finkbeiner tallied a team-best 27 assists.
Hannah Horn finished with 19 assists.
Haley Bryant led Lake Forest with 11 kills while Drevs and Stevens tallied eight apiece. Izzi Visnjevac totaled 31 digs for the Foresters.
Elmhurst plays at the UW-La Crosse Quadrangular this weekend (September 20-21).
