Baseball Team Splits At Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Elmhurst College baseball team split a CCIW road doubleheader with Augustana College. The Bluejays fell 15-3 in game one but rebounded to take game two 16-12.
 
Elmhurst moved to 10-25 overall and 4-17 in the CCIW while Augustana moved to 24-12 overall and 13-8 in league play.
 
AUGUSTANA 15, ELMHURST 3 (Game One) – Elmhurst had a rough start to the doubleheader, falling 15-3 in game one.

Augustana jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning with Gunnar Haskins sparking the inning with a two-run single. The Bluejays got a run back in the second on a Drew Raspolich RBI single, but the Vikings tacked on four more runs in the third to open up an 8-1 cushion. The Vikings blew the game open in the fourth inning, scoring six runs while sending 12 batters to the plate. Tyler Nunez hit a two-run homer while Ryan Kairis and Matt Helms knocked in two runs apiece in the fourth.
 
Elmhurst scored a run in the fifth on a Jacob McMillan single and the Bluejays' final run came home on a pinch-hit double from Zachary Mietzner in the seventh.
 
Trey Compton finished with two hits to lead Elmhurst at the plate.
 
Karson Thomas made the start and took the loss, surrendering eight and seven runs in 2.2 innings of work. Chris Refka earned the win for the Vikings, tossing six innings and allowing eight hits and two runs.
 
ELMHURST16, AUGUSTANA 12 (Game Two) – Elmhurst banged out 18 hits and totaled 16 runs while earning the doubleheader split.
 
Elmhust jumped out to a huge lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. Lorenzo Farino cracked a two-run homer to start the scoring for the Bluejays. Jordan Scrimpsher doubled in two runs to give Elmhurst a 6-3 lead after two innings. The Bluejays broke things open in the third, scoring five runs on three hits. Trey Compton, Farino and Jacob McMillan all singled in runs for the Bluejays.
 
Elmhurst led 15-4 after six innings, but Augustana made things interesting in the seventh, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs, closing to within four in the process. The Vikings added a run in the eighth to make it a three-run ball game, but Scrimpsher doubled home an insurance run in the ninth for the Bluejays.
 
Scrimpsher led the way at the plate, finishing 4-fo-5 with four RBIs. Farino added three hits and drove in three while Compton totaled three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. McMillan added three hits, scored three runs and drove in a run.
 
Tyler Sloan made the start and took a no-decision, working 4.2 innings and allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned. Christian Ebeling picked up the win in relief for the Buejays.
 
Elmhurst hosts North Park University on Friday, May 3.
