Baseball Team Drops Slugfest to Carroll

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst baseball team put the tying runs on base after entering the ninth inning trailing by eight runs, but the Bluejays rally fell just short, falling 14-12 to Carroll University at Butterfield Park.
 
Elmhurst fell to 9-20 overall and 3-12 in the CCIW while Carroll improved to 12-19 overall and 4-11 in league play.
 
Elmhurst jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and a run in the second. Jordan Scrimpsher singled home a run in the first and Trey Compton drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the second to stake the Bluejays to a quick two-run cushion.
 
Carroll answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth. The Pioneers scored four runs on just one hit, taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter to take a two-run lead. The Pioneers added a run in the fifth before breaking things open with seven runs in the sixth. Matthew Putman singled home two runs and Ethan Fleigle doubled home three runs to help spark the big inning for Carroll. The Pioneers added a run in the seventh to move in front 13-3, but Elmhurst answered back with a run on Scrimpsher's RBI single.
 
Carroll tacked on a run in the eighth to move back in front by 10, but Paul Fomby smashed a two-run homer to right field to bring Elmhurst back to within eight runs.
 
A hit batter, a single and an error loaded the bases for the Bluejays in the bottom of the ninth. After a pop out, Fomby singled to left to drive in a run. Jonathan Mays followed with an RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Collin Winston forced in another run, bringing Elmhurst to within five runs. Drew Raspolich was hit by a pitch to force in another run before Compton hit into a fielder's choice to bring in another run and make the score 14-11. Jacob McMillan singled to drive in a run and put the tying run on base, but Scrimpsher hit into a fielder's choice to end the ball game.
 
Elmhurst finished with 15 hits with Scrimpsher recording three of them and driving in two. Fomby added two hits and drove in three while Compton added two hits and knocked in two. Raspolich and Mays added two hits apiece and both drove in a run.
 
Jay Palmer took the loss for Elmhurst, working 3.2 innings and allowing four hits and four runs. He walked six and struck out three. Andrew Stone earned the win for Carroll, tossing six innings and allowing six hits and just one earned run. He walked one and fanned four.
 
Elmhurst plays at Millikin University on April 24.
