Bluejays Drop Tight Contest to Dubuque

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's lacrosse team led for over 25 minutes of action, but came up short in a 9-7 back-and-forth contest against the University of Dubuque.
 
Elmhurst fell to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in league play while Dubuque moved to 1-10 overall and 1-3 in the CCIW.
 
No team lead by two goals until the final 90 seconds of the contest as Dubuque finished the game on a 3-0 run to come away with the win.
 
Elmhurst used goals from Kalie Miller and Greta Wetzel, scored 90 seconds apart in the opening half, to take a 2-1 lead. Dubuque used back-to-back goals to move in front 3-2, but Miller scored from free position with 1:26 remaining to pull Elmhurst even at 3-3. Kiki Donovan scored with 46 seconds to play in the half to give the Spartans a 4-3 lead at the half.
 
Elmhurst used back-to-back goals from Marie Corpuz and Yaziria Cisneros to open up a 5-4 lead early in the second half. Dubuque tied the score at 5-5 on a Sara Rose goal, but Miller answered back with a goal less than a minute later to move Elmhurst back in front at 6-5. Julie Galante scored for the Spartans from free position to knot the score at 6-6 with 18:35 to play. Elmhurst took the lead back just 45 seconds later as Miller fired home a goal from free position.
 
Rose scored the final three goals for the Spartans, hitting the equalizer with 11:02 left and then scoring from free position with 5:20 remaining to put Dubuque back in front at 8-7. Rose connected from free position with 1:23 left to help Dubuque put the game away.
 
Dubuque outshot Elmhurst 20-18 but Elmhurst held a 30-25 edge in ground balls. The Bluejays were successful on 19-of-23 clears.
 
Miller powered Elmhurst in the loss, scoring four of the Bluejays' seven goals. Wetzel, Cisneros and Corpuz added one goal apiece while Tessa Sellentin finished with an assists. Corpuz also caused five turnovers and collected eight ground balls for the Bluejays. Marissa Vaca recorded six saves in goal for the Bluejays while also tallying eight ground balls.
 
Rose paced the Spartans in the victory, scoring five of the team's nine goals. Kori King added two goals while Galante finished with a goal and two assists. Kaley Weir totaled six saves in net for the Spartans.
 
Elmhurst hosts North Central College on Wednesday, April 17.
