Baseball Team Takes Rubber Game From Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Elmhurst baseball team won the rubber game of a three-game weekend series with Carthage College, toppling the Red Men 10-6 on the road.

Elmhurst (7-8. 2-1 CCIW) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Carthage (9-8, 1-3 CCIW) battled back to pull even at 6-6 after eight innings. The Bluejays scored four times in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.

The Bluejays put three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. Jacob McMillan started the scoring with an RBI double. Jordan Scrimpsher and Karson Thomas added RBI singles in the inning to extend the Bluejays' lead to 3-0. Elmhurst doubled its lead in the fifth. Tyler Kledzik doubled home a run and Chad Tucker added a two-run single to put the Bluejays in front 6-0.

Carthage slowly chipped away at the Elmhurst lead. The Red Men scored a run in the bottom of the fifth before plating three more runs in the sixth to close to a 6-4 deficit. The Red Men tied the score in the eighth. Myles Farley knocked in a run with a single and Luke Beckmann tripled home the game-tying run with two outs.

Elmhurst quickly moved back in front in the top of the ninth. Kevin Johlie started the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error. After a sacrifice bunt moved Johlie to third and Trey Compton walked, McMillan put the Bluejays back in front with a double down the right field line. After a fielder's choice forced out Compton at the plate, Kledzik was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Tucker drew a bases loaded walk to force home a run and Thomas followed with a two-run single to put Elmhurst up 10-6.

Carthage used a pair of singles and a hit batter to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Alec Berry induced Farley to fly out to center to end the game.

McMillan and Thomas led Elmhurst at the plate with three hits apiece. McMillan scored three runs and drove in two. Thomas and Tucker knocked in three runs apiece in the victory. Scrimpsher also collected two hits in the victory.

Jay Palmer made the start and took a no-decision, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing eight hits and six runs. He walked two and struck out two. Fred Birr picked up the win in relief, moving to 1-1 on the season. Birr allowed one hit and fanned one in two-thirds of an inning. Berry pitched the ninth for Elmhurst and allowed two hits while striking out one.
