Baseball Team Drops Two to DePauw

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team came up short in both ends of a doubleheader to DePauw University at the RussMatt Tournament in Florida. Elmhurst dropped game one 8-3 and fell 13-7 in the night cap.

Elmhurst slipped to 4-7 on the season with the two losses.

DEPAUW 8, ELMHURST 3 (Game One) - Elmhurst dropped the opening game of a doubleheader to DePauw by an 8-3 final score.

Elmhurst grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on Kyle Kohn's two-out, RBI single. The Tigers answered back with a run in the third to tie the score. DePauw moved in front with a run in the fourth and extended its lead to 5-2 with two runs in the fifth. Tyler Kledzik's run-scoring groundout in the sixth brought Elmhurst to within two runs, but DePauw tacked on three runs in the seventh to pull away for the five-run win.

Drew Raspolich led Elmhurst with two hits in the loss.

Kevin Johlie made the start and took the loss, working 4.1 innings and allowing six hits and four earned runs. He walked three and fanned three. Joe Runnells earned the win for the Tigers, tossing five innings and allowing just five hits and one earned run. He walked one and struck out five.

DEPAUW 13 ELMHURST 7 (Game Two) - DePauw used a six-run fourth inning to erase an early Elmhurst lead and complete the sweep of the doubleheader.

The Tigers capitalized on an Elmhurst error in the first to score three unearned runs. The lead was short lived as Elmhurst answered back with five runs in the top of the second. Kledzik sparked the Bluejays' big inning by blasting a two-out, grand slam to put the Bluejays in front 5-3.

DePauw made Elmhurst pay for an error in the fourth inning. The Tigers used three two-out hits to plate six runners and move back in front 9-5.

Elmhurst got a run back in the fifth on a Kledzik RBI double but the Tigers scored two in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 11-6. Elmhurst scored its final run of the game in the sixth on a Lorezno Farino RBI double.

Kedzik and Farino combined for almost all of the Bluejays' offense. Kledzik recorded two hits and drove in five while Farino finished with two hits and two RBIs. Trey Compton and Drew Raspolich also recorded hits for the Bluejays.

JD Knight made the start and took a no-decision while not allowing an earned run. Knight worked 3.1 innings and allowed three hits and five unearned runs. He walked two and struck out three. Alec Berry suffered the loss in relief, surrendering six hits and eight runs (just three earned) in 2.2 innings. Berry walked two and struck out two.

Elmhurst wraps up its trip to Florida by taking on UW-Whitewater on March 26.
