Bluejays' Rally Falls Short to JWU

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's lacrosse team's second half rally came up just short as the Bluejays fell 12-7 to Johnson & Wales University (Colo.) at Langhorst Field.
 
Elmhurst (1-5) scored the game's first goal, less than a minute into the contest as Greta Wetzel connected off a Kalie Miller assist. Johnson and Wales then took control, ripping off five straight goals to grab a 5-1 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Marissa Fico scored to make the score 5-2, but the Wildcats answered back to push their lead back to four. The Bluejays scored the final two goals of the half as Miller and Marie Corpuz both found the back of the net to make the score 6-4 at halftime in favor of Johnson & Wales.
 
Elmhurst started quickly in the second half as Wetzel netted back-to-back goals, evening the score at 6-6 with 24 minutes remaining. Johnson and Wales ended a 29-minute scoreless drought with a goal from Madisyn Tulenchik to move back in front at 7-6. The Bluejays answered back three minutes later as Corpuz scored off a Miller assist to pull the Bluejays even at 7-7 with just over minute minutes remaining.
 
The Wildcats closed the game on a 5-0 run, scoring three times in a two-minute span to pull away for the victory.
 
Wetzel led Elmhurst's offense with three goals while Corpuz added two. Miller finished with three points on the day, netting a goal and adding two assists. Corpuz led the team in ground balls with seven. Marissa Vaca recorded 11 saves in goal for the Bluejays.
 
Ashley Guerrero paced the Wildcasts with four goals while Katie Smith and Tulenchik totaled three goals apiece.
 
Elmhurst opens CCIW play on April 3 by traveling to the University of Chicago.
