AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team continued play at the RussMatt Tournament in Florida by splitting a doubleheader with Middlebury College. The Bluejays fell 3-1 in game one but bounced back to take game two 4-1.
Elmhurst moved to 4-5 on the season with the split.
MIDDLEBURY 3, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) - Middlebury scored a run in the first and two more in the fourth to topple Elmhurst 3-1 in game one of a doubleheader.
Elmhurst was limited to just five hits in the contest and the Bluejays scored their only run in the fifth on a solo homer off the bat of
Chad Tucker. The Bluejays put the tying runs on base in the seventh, but a groundout ended the game and Elmhurst's rally.
Tucker collected two of the Bluejays' five hits in the loss.
Fred Birr made the start and took the loss for the Bluejays, working four innings and surrendering six hits and three earned runs. He walked five and fanned four.
Karson Thomas pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Elmhurst, allowing just two hits.
Colin Waters picked up the win for Middlebury, working six innings and allowing just four hits and one run. He walked one and fanned five.
ELMHURST 4, MIDDLEBURY 1 (Game Two) - Jordan Scrimpsher pitched six strong innings as the Bluejays salvaged the doubleheader split by taking game two 4-1.
Scrimpsher scattered five hits and one run over six innings of work. He walked three and struck out eight while improving to 2-0 on the season.
Alec Berry pitched a perfect seventh inning to record his second save of the season.
The Bluejays made Middlbury (6-3) pay for its mistakes, scoring three unearned runs in the win. Scrimpsher started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first after a Middlebury error extended the inning.
Elmhurst took advantage of a cather's interference call in the third inning to score two runs with two outs. Scrimpsher singled home a run and
Tyler Kledzik added a two-out RBI double in the inning.
Kevin Johlie singled home Elmhurst's last run of the game in the sixth inning.
Drew Raspolich and
Trey Compton toaled two hits apiece in the victory. Raspolich also stole a base and scored on Johlie's single in the sixth.
Elmhurst takes on DePauw University on Monday, March 25.
