Baseball Team Split Two in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team opened its road trip to the RussMatt Invitational in Florida by splitting a pair of games. The Bluejays toppled St. Norbert College 10-1 before falling 14-6 to Franklin College in the night cap. 

Elmhurst moved to 3-4 on the season with the split.

ELMHURT 10, ST. NORBERT 1 - Alex Kielion pitched eight strong innings to help Elmhurst upend St. Norbert 10-1 in the Bluejays' opening game of the RussMatt Tournament. 

The Bluejays scored twice in the third and then broke the game open later, scoring three rimes in the seventh, three in eighth and two more in the ninth. Jacob McMillan knocked a pair of runs with a two-run single in the seventh while Trey Compton doubled home two runs in the eighth. Colin Winston added a two-run single for the Bluejays in the ninth. 

Drew Raspolich collected three of Elmhurst's 12 hits while also scoring three runs and driving in one. Winston finished two hits and two RBIs while Tyler Kledzik also recorded two hits for the Bluejays. 

Kielion was solid for the Bluejays, working eight strong innings and limiting St. Norbert to only five hits and one unearned run. He walked one and fanned five. 

FRANKLIN 14, ELMHURST 6 -  Elmhurst dropped the night cap 14-6 to Franklin College to finish the day with a 1-1 mark.

Franklin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the second and two more in the top of the fifth. 

Jacob McMillan and Kevin Johlie singled home runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Bluejays to within a run, but Franklin blew things open in the sixth with seven runs. Kevin Bixler delivered the big blow, with a grand slam. 

Elmhurst got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, but Franklin scored a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to pull away for the 14-6 win.

McMillan led Elmhurst's offense with three hits in the loss. Tyler Kledzik and Chad Tucker added two hits apiece.

Jay Palmer took the loss for Elmhurst, working five innings and allowing six hits and five runs. He walked four and struck out four. 

Elmhurst plays a doubleheader against Middlebury College on Sunday, March 24.
