Football Team Falls at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – A 35-point Carthage outburst in the second quarter proved too much for the Elmhurst football team in the Bluejays' 63-7 road loss to the Red Men.
 
Elmhurst slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the CCIW following the loss while Carthage upped its record to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.
 
Carthage took the opening kickoff and 69 yards, grabbing a 7-0 lead following a 10-yard touchdown run from Lafayette McGary. Elmhurst pushed the ball down to the Carthage 10-yard line, but a missed field goal kept the Bluejays off the scoreboard.
 
Elmhurst's defense forced two punts and a turnover on downs before Carthage erupted in the second quarter, scoring five straight times to blow the game open. McGary scored on runs of one, two and 11 yards while Billy Dury added a 24-yard touchdown run. Sean Wells also scored on a 14-yard reception from Colton Klein. Carthage opened up a 42-0 lead at the half.
 
The Red Men tacked on three touchdowns in the third quarter, scoring on a nine-yard run from Klein, a 20-yard rush from Dana Fontenot and a 30-yard fumble recovery from Marlon Sam.

Elmhurst avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter as the Bluejays capped a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive with a six-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Summers to Jawan Gaines.
 
Carthage outgained Elmhurst 568-232, including a 287-102 edge on the ground. Summers led Elmhurst on the ground, rushing 15 times for 65 yards while also throwing for 99 yards and a touchdown.
 
McGary led the Red Men with 179 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries. Dury completed 10-of-13 passes for 193 yards while Evan French caught five passes for 125 yards.
 
Sean Jay led Elmhurst's defense with 12 tackles, including 10 solo stops.
 
Elmhurst hosts Washington University in St. Louis next Saturday, October 6.
