Bluejays Come Up Short in 23-10 Loss to WashU

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst football team limited a high-powered Washington University in St. Louis offense to only 287 yards, but the Bluejays found themselves on the wrong end of a 23-10 final score.

After scoring a combined 95 points in its last two games and averaging over 450 yards of offense per contest, Elmhurst kept Washington (4-1, 3-1 CCIW) in check for much of the game, but the Bears took advantage of a short field to come away with the 13-point victory.

After five straight punts to start the game, including Washington going three-and-out on its first two possessions, the Bears took over at midfield following an Elmhurst punt. John Fischer capped a nine-play scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give WashU a quick 7-0 lead.

Elmhurst bounced back early in the second quarter, driving 71 yards in just seven plays to even the score. Jacob Mammosser's one-handed, juggling catch at the two-yard line set up a two-yard touchdown run from Ben Holloway to even the score at 7-7.

The Bears wasted no time reclaiming the lead. After taking over at their own 35-yard line following the Elmhurst touchdown, Johnny Davidson capped a three-play scoring drive with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Matt Goldberg, putting the Bears up 14-7.

WashU blocked a punt on Elmhurst's next possession, recovering the ball at the Bluejays' 15-yard line. Fisher capped a three-play drive with a two-yard TD plunge. The extra point was missed, giving WashU a 20-7 lead at the half.

Elmhurst cut into the Bears' lead in the third quarter. The Bluejays drove down to the nine-yard line before settling for a 30-yard field goal from Kaiden Truninger just before the end of the third quarter.

WashU eliminated its no-huddle offense in the fourth quarter, burning over five minutes off the clock while extending its lead back to 13 points after a 25-yard field goal from Charles Coccia.

Elmhurst drove down to the WashU 25-yard line on the ensuing possession, before turning the ball over on downs and allowing the Bears to run out the clock.

WashU outgained Elmhurst 287-234. The Bears passed for 216 while rushing for 71. Elmhurst finished with 117 yards on the ground and through the air. The Bluejays also controlled the clock, owning a 17-minute time of possession advantage.

Holloway led Elmhurst's ground attack with 57 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Orlando Hernandez carried seven times and rushed for 57 yards while playing just in the second half. Chase Hankins and Hernandez combined to throw for 117 yards in the loss. Hankins completed 15-of-22 passes for 83 yards while Hernandez finished 8-of-15 for 34 yards.

Davidson led the Bears' passing attack, tossing for 216 yards and a score while completing 21-of-35 attempts. Fisher led the Bears on the ground with 44 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

Brandon Dominski led Elmhurst's defene with 10 tackles, including a half sack. Dominski also recovered a mid-air fumble and returned it 27 yards after Lavor Little stripped Davidson off the ball. Brandon Greer added eight tackles for the Bluejays. Romain Richards and Luke Coon both finished with sacks for Elmhurst.
