Men's Soccer Team Can't Stop #2 Chicago

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 halftime lead, but second-ranked University of Chicago overpowered the Bluejays in the second half to come away with a 3-1 victory.

Elmhurst (1-8) jumped on the scoreboard first, netting a 1-0 lead after Keegan Thompson collected Luke Deel's header, moved around a defender and tucked his shot into the back of the net.

Chicago (9-0-1) outshot Elmhurst 11-5 in the opening half, but Elmhurst's lead could have easily been three goals at the half. Chicago's defense saved two Elmhurst scoring attempts after Elmhurst collected rebounds with Maroon's Keeper Aaron Katsimpalis out of position.

Chicago surged back in the second half, erupting for three goals in a five-minute span to turn a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead. Matthew Koh scored in the 58th minute off assists from Carter Romero and Gary Zhao to pull the Maroons even at 1-1.

Four minutes later, Romero volleyed a cross from Koh into the net to put the Maroons in front 2-1. Exactly 30 seconds later, Koh netted his second goal off the game off an assist from Max Lopez.

Chicago outshot the Bluejays 22-6 for the contest and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. Patrick Smith recorded four saves while making his first career start in goal for the Bluejays.

Elmhurst begins CCIW play on Saturday, September 29, by hosting Carthage College at Langhorst Field.
