ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's soccer team outshot Benedictine 16-4, but the Bluejays' found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 final score.
Benedictine (3-2) scored first off a deep free kick from Santiago Beltran that was headed by Erik Stammer and then knocked home by Lukasz Sulka. The goal in the 16th minute gave the Eagles a quick 1-0 lead.
Elmhurst pulled even less than seven minutes later. Benedictine was whistled for a foul in the box and
Keegan Thompson connected on the ensuing penalty kick to pull the Bluejays level at 1-1.
A red card to Benedictine late in the first half, gave the Bluejays a man advantage for the entire second half, but Elmhurst could not capitalize, despite outshooting Benedictine 10-2 in the half. The Eagles took advantage of an Elmhurst foul to score the game-winner in the 60th minute. Beltran sent a free kick through the box to Hayden Van Son. Van Son headed the ball to the far post and in the net to give the Eagles the go-ahead goal.
Elmhurst (1-4) had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks in the loss.
Donnie Kvien recorded two saves in goal for Elmhurst while Shawn Chervets stopped eight shots in net for the Eagles.
Elmhurst travels to Greenville College on Friday, September 14.
