ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's lacrosse team dropped its final home game of the 2018 season, falling to Carthage College 17-6.
Elmhurst fell to 6-8 overall and 5-9 overall and 0-5 in the CCIW while Carthage improved to 12-5 and 4-2 in league play.
Despite being shorthanded due to injuries, the Bluejays jumped out to a quick lead against the Lady Reds.
Grace Knoebel and
Yaziria Cisneros scored just 48 seconds apart to stake Elmhurst to a quick 2-0 lead just four minutes into the contest.
Goals 43 seconds apart from Nicole Bowman and India Soodan pulled Carthage even with 20 minutes left in the opening half.
The Bluejays answered back with goals from
Ellen Brown and
Isabel Walker to retake a two-goal lead.
Carthage answered back by rattling off the next seven goals, including four from Rachel Mussell to open up a 9-4 lead at the half. The Lady Reds ran their goal streak to 11 by scoring the first four goals of the second half, extending their lead to 13-4 in the process.
Walker scored with 23:50 remaining to bring Elmhurst to within eight, but back-to-back goals from Savanna Giesler and Jessie Gibson gave Carthage a 10-goal cushion as the Lady Reds coasted the rest of the way to the 11-goal win.
Carthage outshot Elmhurst 37-16 and enjoyed a 41-19 edge in ground balls.
Walker led Elmhurst with four points on two goals and two assists. Knoebel tacked on two goals and won 10 draw controls. Cisneros and Brown added one goal apiece for the Bluejays.
Megan Keener took the loss in net, recording 13 saves in the contest.
Mussell led Carthage with five points on four goals and one assist. Megan McNamara tallied five assists while Soodan finished with three goals and an assist. Santin added four points on two goals and two assists. Maggie Allen picked up the win in goal with seven saves.
Elmhurst closes its 2018 season by playing at Augustana College on Saturday, April 28.
