Bluejays Win Streak Snapped by IWU

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team's nine-game winning streak was snapped in 17-10 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University.
 
Elmhurst slipped to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the CCIW with the loss while the Titans improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in league play.
 
IWU scored the first goal just 23 seconds into the contest as Will Rossi found the back of the net. The Bluejays pulled even five minutes later when Mac Harden scored off a Marcus Yandall feed. The Titans answered back with three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Elmhurst cut the deficit down to two on a Jake Heil goal, but the Titans outscored the Bluejays 2-0 in the second quarter to take a 7-2 lead at halftime.
 
The Titans scored the first two goals of the third period to open up an eight-goal cushion at 10-2. Harden broke the Titans' scoring streak with his second goal of the game, but a late Titans goal gave IWU an 11-3 lead after three quarters.
 
Elmhurst and IWU traded goal for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter with IWU retaining its eight-goal lead at 13-5. Back-to-back goals from Andrew Frerich and Jake Heil cut the deficit down to six with 7:30 remaining, but the Titans answered right back with a goal from Nick Winter to reestablish a seven-goal cushion at 14-7. Harden's third goal of the game brought the Bluejays back to within six with 5:34 to play, but Elmhurst came no closer as the Titans scored two straight to push their lead back to eight goals. Frerich scored in the final seconds to make the score 17-10 in favor of the Titans.
 
IWU outshot The Bluejays 53-40 and enjoyed a 54-34 edge in ground balls.
 
Frerich led Elmhurst in the loss with four goals while Harden (three goals, one assist) and Cullen Nordemann (one goal, three assists) totaled four points apiece. Jake Heil added two goals for the Bluejays. Jacob Delgado took the loss in goal despite recording 21 saves.
 
Peter Trunk led the Titans in the win with eight points, scoring seven goals and one assist. Alex Doorenbos and Will Rossi added three goals apiece for the Titans. J.C. Grabarek won 24-of-30 faceoffs and totaled 19 ground balls for the Titans.
 
Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Thursday, April 19.
