KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team outscored Carthage 5-1 in the second half en route to a 9-5 road victory over the Red Men.
Elmhurst improved to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW with the victory while Carthage fell to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in league play. The win was the Bluejays' first win over Carthage in the program's brief history.
Elmhurst raced out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter behind goals from
Mac Harden,
Marcus Yandall and
Jake Cambron. Carthage turned the table in the second quarter, outscoring the Bluejays 3-1 to pull even at 4-4 at halftime.
The Bluejays scored the first three goals of the second half to build a 7-4 lead. Yandall scored midway through the third quarter to put Elmhurst in front 5-4. Harden scored with just 90 seconds left in the quarter to give Elmhurst a two-goal cushion after three quarters. Harden pumped in his fourth goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to put Elmhurst in front by three.
Carthage cut the deficit down to two with three minutes remaining, but goals from
Andrew Frerich and
Andrew Lentz in the final 75 seconds put the game away for the Bluejays.
Carthage outshot Elmhurst 37-31 while both teams totaled 29 ground balls. Elmhurst won 11-of-18 faceoffs in the contest and completed 19-of-20 clears.
Harden led Elmhurst's offense with four goals while Yandall finished with two for the Bluejays. Frerich finished with three points in the victory, tallying one goal and two assists. Lentz finished with one goal while
Cullen Nordemann and
Dan O'Connell finished with one assist apiece.
Carter Meyer won 11 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls.
Eric Langston led the squad in ground balls with seven while also forcing two turnovers. Jacob Delgado recorded 12 saves in the net for the Bluejays.
Colin Poitras finished with two goals for the Red Men while Ethan Flight totaled three points on a goal and two assists. Zerik Rodriguez tallied seven saves in goal for the Red Men.
Elmhurst hosts North Central College on Saturday, April 21.
